A director, a screenwriter, a producer.
Imtiaz Ali began his career directing TV programs including Kurukshetra for ZEE TV and IMTIHAAN for Doordarshan. He moved on to Bollywood films. In 2005, he made his directorial debut with SOCHA NA THA starring ABHAY DEOL and AYESHA TAKIA. Ali founded his film production company, Window Seat Films; whose first release was HIGHWAY.
His world is drastically different from what’s offered to us by other filmmakers. Even though Indian cinema has transcended several centuries in the past few decades in terms of realism on the silver screen, it still takes creative liberties very often because Bollywood is synonymous for entertainment only. Ali, on the other hand, takes his craft extremely seriously and his movies offer a new bird`s-eye view on relationship Since Imtiaz Ali's movies are but direct interpretations of life on screen only, he frequently showcases the innate human desire to travel far & wide, in a way that we have only one life to live & inspires us to live it to the fullest.
I'm fairly certain that once in your life after watching an Imtiaz Ali movie you felt like leaving everything immediately and taking off to far-off places, right? Or maybe you just connected with the lead characters- A person who seems very normal at first but battling with inner demons and struggling against the world only to realize later that their conflict is internal and experiencing an increasing gush to find one's passion. That's the thing with Imtiaz Ali and his storytelling. Imtiaz as a filmmaker, has such a compelling way of storytelling that mesmerizes the audience with its narrative, where he exposes the complexities of the human mind, the romance-heartbreak, and the healing journey displays the build-up of the characters like no other filmmaker can and this is what strikes the chores with the most viewers. There's just something different about his movies and an Imtiaz Ali devotee is well-aware of his filmmaking style.
Ali said in an interview that: 'I feel that entertainment is the way of taking you away from your immediate reality.'
DID YOU KNOW?
Highway was one of the first scripts that Imtiaz Ali wrote, roughly 20 years prior to its release. When he bumped into Alia Bhatt at one of the screenings, he knew Highway had to be made with her playing the lead role.
